South Devon Brixham Canoeing: Every Litter Pick Helps

One of the things I’ve noticed in recent years is the increase in rubbish when I’m out and about, not just locally in Brixham, but all across Devon. Whenever possible, I always pick it up and dispose of it. It is something that I am passionate about in both a personal and professional capacity. This is why I strive to be a role model and lead by example. One of the ways I do this is by starting a litter pick whilst out canoeing with groups and providing education on the negative effect litter can have on our environment. This demonstrates how simple it is for one person to make a positive impact on the environment, which hopefully has a knock-on effect of inspiring others.

The culprits…

On a recent trip, I collected a mix of litter, which was predominately little bits of fishing line and various pieces of plastic. The fishing lines varied between small thin lines and thicker industrial nets, some of which were hard to spot and sea life would mistake for food. Crisp packets were the other main culprit for rubbish in the sea. This is something that baffles and frustrates me as the solution is so simple. It could either be taken home or popped in a bin.

How we can help…

By educating young children about the negative impacts of litter and the simple measures that can be put in place to avoid it, we will hopefully be able to spread awareness to the next generation.
