Llech Ddu/Crib Lem Spur

When you think grade 1 scrambles in Snowdonia, inevitably those that will first spring to mind are the classic knife-edged arete of Crib Goch, or the spectacular North Ridge of Tryfan. While these are some of the finest scrambles in the UK, they are also well known for being some of the finest scrambles in the UK. So, if you’re looking to get out into the mountains to find solitude and an escape from it all, you should probably choose a different scramble. Look no further than ‘Crib Lem Spur’ (also known as Llech Ddu Spur).

The Approach

Crib Lem Spur is an amazing grade 1 scramble in Snowdonia that finishes on the summit of Carnedd Dafydd. The adventure begins in the town of Bethesda and after winding through lanes and alleyways, you’ll end up in some old fields where the path becomes difficult to follow. Ahead is the beautiful Afon Llafar and hidden just out of sight is the early stage of Crib Lem Spur. Walking through the mountain valley is simply delightful and feels worlds away from the busy Snowdon.

Instead of going up the ridge to the summit of Carnedd Dafydd, you will carry on up the valley and eventually turn right into Cwmglas Bach. A very vague path heads up left of the left-hand waterfall, which is just right of Llech Ddu. One you spot a quartz band, traverse left to the start of the true Crib Lem Spur.

Now the fun truly begins! The route is never too difficult, with many options to choose from. There are a few delightful moves up some pinnacles, with plenty of hand and footholds. Make sure to look back every now and then to take in the spectacular views of the ridge and valley. The classic ‘Christmas Tree Slab’ also makes for a great photo!

Summiting Carnedd Dafydd

Almost too soon, you’ll be on the summit of Carnedd Dafydd. Take a moment to appreciate the view, which on a clear day are epic! From here you have the option to keep the day shorter, head north and pick up the ridge that leads down to Mynydd Du and return whence you came. Alternatively, you can complete the Cwm Llafar Horseshoe, following the impressive ridge eastwards to eventually gain Carnedd Llewelyn followed by Yr Elen.
