COMMANDO RIDGE (AKA BOSIGRAN RIDGE)
Cornwall’s Commando Ridge, also known as Bosigran Ridge, is one of Cornwall’s most famous rock climbs, offering diverse climbing in a spectacular setting. Often referred to as the best VDiff in the West Country, Cornwall’s Commando Ridge is a classic climb which accommodates all levels of climbers. The route first climbed in 1902 by Arthur Andrews, went on to become known as ‘Commando Ridge’ during the 1940s when commando soldiers used it as a training ground in preparation for wartime cliff assaults of World War Two. APPORACHING CORNWALL’S COMMANDO RIDGE
This 200m ridge line hovers high above the icy blue sea and takes in 140m of ascent. There are multiple route variations for this climb, as accessing the first pitches is dependent upon the tide and swell. On a low tide with low swell, the first pitch is approached via two abseils, with a grassy scramble in between. The first pitch is superb climbing. It begins at the end of a ramp above the zawn and climbs up on steep blocks to gain a black wall riddled with good holds. From here, the vertical crack is climbed to exit the booming zawn to reach the airy, belay ledge.
ADVENTURE ROCK CLIMBING IN CORNWALL
From the ledge, move along the boulders to the foot of a chimney. Climb this to reach the stance below a beaked boulder. Move up to the beak, then traverse left between two towers, reaching an amazing position for the grade. The route continues in this manner for another few pitches: the location, exposure and sections of traversing and down-climbing providing an all-time classic adventure.
While the climbing on Cornwall’s Commando Ridge is never too difficult, it is by no means a novice’s expedition – unless done with a competent companion! The exposure, long run outs, sections of down climbing and traversing with substantial drops on either side of the ridge call for an experienced leader. Saying that, Cornwall’s Commando Ridge is not a route to be missed. The rock is brilliant, the climbing even better and the location is stunning! Three stars for sure!
