Sheepstor Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) Prep: Dartmoor Edition Pt 1 of 2

Sheepstor Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) Prep: Dartmoor Edition Pt 1 of 2

For me, one of the best parts of rock climbing is the community. That feeling of being part of a group that all share my interest and love of the sport. When I was working towards gaining my Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) qualification, the local knowledge of Dartmoor from the people around me made such a difference. I went into the assessment feeling as calm as can be whilst being assessed.

Sheepstor, Dartmoor…

When I heard a friend had booked their RCI assessment I was more than happy to help them with their prep. For one of these days, we headed to the local Dartmoor crag of Sheepstor. This is a common venue for assessment but also has a variety of great places to practice all aspects of the assessment.

Rigging a bottom-rope…

To start with we set up a bottom-rope, to mimic a scenario where we were instructing a group of beginner outdoor climbers. There was a to take into consideration. For example, the route selection. Would it be appropriate for their skill level? Were there appropriate anchors at the top so it would be safe? Once the route and anchors were selected, we had to decide how to bring all the pieces together.

Decision making when rigging a bottom-rope…

Once the method was selected and the setup was complete, we discussed what factors had influenced decision-making and what, if anything, could have been done differently. Not because it was wrong or unsafe, but was there a better way?

We then went through the IDEAS checklist to make sure it was safe:

  • Are the anchors independent?
  • Are the anchors directional?
  • Are the anchors equalised?
  • Are the angles within safe limits?
  • Was it safe? (For example, karabiners gates secured and not cross-loaded)
