Women in Winter: Winter Skills Course

Our women only courses are delivered by women for women in a positive and supportive environment allowing you to get the best from your experience with us.

In January 2019 Adelong delivered a women only winter skills course in Scotland.  The course runs over two days and takes full advantage of the conditions to deliver a fun and informative opportunity for you to learn all the necessary skills to keep safe in the mountains during winter walking adventures.

“Charlie was extremely confident, personable and professional. She knew so much about the conditions and terrain and was able impart her extensive knowledge in simple terms and make it relevant” (Trip Advisor, Jan 2019)

Starting with the basics, we look at where to obtain accurate weather forecasts, and how to read mountain weather forecasts and avalanche forecasts effectively.  Transferring the information to ‘real life’ is an essential skill and is emphasised throughout the two days.

Before venturing into the hills, we have a chat about what we are carrying in our bags and why.  Ensuring that as a group we have everything that we need without carrying the kitchen sink.

Out on the ground, skills to identify hazards, and use the knowledge of forecasts are put into practice.  We learn how to read the snow and choose safe routes; looking at snow pack and gaining an understanding of how the layers are formed allows a more informed decision on route choice.

Throughout the two days we put our navigation skills into practice, offering top tips and advice.  Looking at navigating in crystal clear conditions and also in low visibility when conditions allow.

The use of crampons and ice axes is practiced, introducing footwork to those new to crampons and honing skills for those who may have used them before.  Of course, we have some fun sliding in the snow and practising with our axes.

We also ensure that we talk about what to do in an emergency and take this into account when making the essential decisions about route choice with reference to weather conditions and avalanche forecasts.

“A great time in the Cairngorms with Charlie – friendly, fun, and full of knowledge. Charlie made the best out of the conditions available to us. The course delivered exactly what it said – Winter skills & Winter Walking including lots of information on keeping safe in the mountains and reading the snow conditions around us. She inspired confidence and has a brilliant approachable style making it easy to ask questions and exploit her knowledge. A fantastic few days! Cheers Charlie!” (Trip Advisor, Jan 2019)
